Planning and Project Management - An IFMA Based Competency Course

Facility management professionals are expected to be proficient in the specialty area of project management.  The owner’s expectations for a new facility or successful remodel are deceptively simple:  the project must be of the highest technical quality, completed on time, and of course, within budget.  The reality of planning and construction in today’s rapidly changing environment is quite complex.

Comprehending the requirements involved in developing facility plans and managing programming and design through construction and relocations allow facility managers to be successful. Management of individual projects is part of the greater context of business operations that is based on an overall business or corporate strategy.

Identify:

  • Part 1: The Business Context of a Project—A strong linkage between the function of facility management and the vision, goals and strategies of the business is essential for success.
  • Part 2: Project Planning and Management—Project planning (scope definition and team identification) and management (quality, schedule and budget compliance) are core skills in facility management. The skills are particularly important because of the wide range of projects assigned to the facility function.
  • Part 3: The Design Process—Programming and design are related. Programming is the process of defining user needs and developing a statement of requirements. Programs include space utilization and criteria for support systems. The design transforms the program requirements into specific ideas about allocations, systems, inventory and equipment and ultimately visualizes the program.
  • Part 4: The Construction and Occupancy Process— This part of the course stresses the role and responsibilities of the facility manager during construction projects.

Course activities include building a contingency plan, reviewing building plans and associated technical documents, group discussions and short sectional quizzes.
